Unmet Therapeutic Needs in Animal Health: A Valuable Mapping to Identify Market Opportunities

The French Animal Health Network, in collaboration with the French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV/Anses), has made available a mapping of unmet therapeutic needs in animal health in France. A valuable resource for companies developing products for the veterinary market.
What this mapping contains
For each animal species and a given disease, the mapping describes three key elements: the problem encountered in the field, the therapeutic alternatives already available, and the level of priority associated with the unmet need.
One figure illustrates the concrete impact of this approach: between 2022 and 2024, 25% to 67% of identified problems were resolved or are in the process of being resolved according to data presented by Franck Fourès (ANMV) at the EMA Veterinary Innovation Day in March 2025. A result that reflects the effectiveness of a collaborative approach between field professionals, industry players and competent authorities.
Why this resource is strategically valuable
Innovating in animal health is not just about developing a technically sound product. It first requires understanding the real needs on the ground: which species, which diseases, which alternatives already exist, and what level of priority animal health professionals assign to each unmet need.
In this sense, this mapping provides a valuable starting point for building what I call a state of the art of the target market, an essential prerequisite before committing resources to development. It makes it possible to verify that the envisaged product addresses a real and unmet need, to assess existing competition, and to anticipate the clinical arguments that will need to be demonstrated to convince animal health professionals and ultimately regulatory authorities.
It is also a useful tool for companies developing products in human health and considering an extension to the veterinary market: identifying unmet needs by species and by disease makes it possible to target the most relevant opportunities and to orient the development strategy from the outset.
